Britain's Oliver Golding made the junior US Open second round with a battling 7-6 (11-9) 6-3 victory over Spain's Andres Artunedo Martinavarr. The 16-year-old Londoner, a semi-finalist in the juniors at Wimbledon this year, led 3-1 before surviving a gruelling tie-break in the first set. After an early break in the second set, Golding maintained the momentum to secure his win in just under two hours. The Youth Olympics doubles gold medallist next plays Mitchell Frank. "It was a scrappy match but was a big one to get through because I lost to him a couple of months ago on clay in the European Championships," Golding said. On receiving a code violation for releasing his racquet, Golding insisted: "It just slid out of my hand and just trickled over the fence. The umpire said she knew it was an accident but had to give me a code violation because it went out of the court." Other British juniors competing at Flushing Meadows are 17-year-old George Morgan and eighth seed Laura Robson. Morgan will face Ecuador's 15th seed Roberto Quiroz for a place in the second round. The 16-year-old Robson is involved in the junior tournament after missing out on a place in the main draw following her loss in the last round of qualifying last week. The former junior Wimbledon champion, who was bidding to reach her first Grand Slam tournament by right, will be up against Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Robson has made the semi-finals of her last three junior Grand Slams and is hoping to emulate the efforts of compatriot Heather Watson who was crowned junior US champion last year.
