Top Britons through in Barnstaple

Keothavong made it through to the second round in straight sets

Britain's top three tennis players have all made it safely through Wednesday's first round of the Barnstaple Open.

Top seed and British number one Anne Keothavong beat South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers 7-6 6-2.

British number two and fifth seed Elena Baltacha was made to work hard for her 7-6 6-7 6-2 win over Melanie Klaffner from Austria.

But sixth seed and British number three Katie O'Brien cruised past fellow Brit Amanda Elliot 6-1 6-2.

In a surprise result, he number two seed and world number 96, Estonia's Maret Ani, was beaten in straight sets by Lithuania qualifier Lina Stanciute 6-3 7-6.

Thursday's second round matches see Keothavong taking on Ukrainian Yevheniia Savranska, Baltacha facing Great Britain's Anna Smith and O'Brien playing Andrea Hlavackova from the Czech Republic.
