Guernsey tennis player Heather Watson was knocked out of the girls' singles championship at Wimbledon in the first round on Saturday.

The 16-year-old, who is the national champion for her age group, lost 6-3 3-6 6-4 to Slovakian Zuzana Luknarova.

She is the first Channel Islander ever to make the main draw of the junior event at the All England Club.

She was awarded a wildcard last week and is ranked eighth in Britain at junior level and 227 in the world.

"It was a tough match and very close," Watson told BBC Guernsey.

"It was such a great experience and I loved playing on Wimbledon.

"There was a really large crowd and I saw some Guernsey women with some poster boards with my name on it so it was really exciting."

Watson was one of the youngest competitors in the event and still has two years left at junior level.

In the first round of the doubles on Tuesday, she and her partner Tara Moore will meet Bulgaria's Bistra Otashlivska and Alyona Sotnikova of the Ukraine.
