Watson has had a successful year (James Jordan) |
Guernsey's national under-16s tennis champion Heather Watson is set to become the first Channel Islander to compete at Junior Wimbledon. Watson has been given a wildcard to enter the tournament after her good form over the past year. In addition to winning the national title last August, she also reached the quarter finals of the ITF grade one event at Roehampton. Watson also beat Australia's world number 41 Isabella Holland this year. "I'm really, really pleased and really looking forward to it," Watson told BBC Guernsey. "I obviously want to win the whole thing but I'm going to take it match by match and focus on one match at a time. "I'm going to be training really hard and preparing well so I can play the best that I can play," she added. Watson has already been selected to represent Guernsey at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India from 12 to 18 October 2008.
