Guernsey send 10 to Youth Games

Guernsey tennis player Heather Watson will be heading to India

Ten Guernsey athletes will join up to 1,200 other youngsters in India at the third Commonwealth Youth Games at Pune from 12 to 18 October 2008.

The group includes Alice Loveridge (Table Tennis), Heather Watson (Tennis) and athlete Michael Batiste.

They will join competitors from most of the 71 Commonwealth Countries competing in nine sports.

Team Manager David Harry said: "Even at this young age they are tried and tested at this level of competition."

Commonwealth Youth Games
The event was first held in Edinburgh in 2000. 733 young athletes from 14 countries took part in eight sports
The second event was held in Australia in 2004
Almost 1000 athletes from 25 countries competed in 10 sports. Guernsey sent two athletes for the first time
Athlete numbers are restricted by the Commonwealth Games Federation and Host Nation and are based on team numbers attending the previous two Senior Commonwealth Games.

All athletes must be 18 years of age, or younger, in the year of the Games.

The Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association will also send athletes Hywel Robinson and Batiste, Loveridge and Garry Dodd from Table Tennis, swimmers Robyn Le Friec, Alexander Beaton, James Jurkiewicz and Matthew Girard plus tennis players Watson and Nicholas Thibeault.

GCGA Vice-Chairman David Harry was general team manager for the Melbourne 2006 Games and will lead the team to India.
