Richard Bloomfield had to come from match-point down in Queen's qualifying |
Norfolk's Richard Bloomfield was knocked out of the Artois Championships on Tuesday, losing to Fernando Gonzalez in straight sets 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. The 25-year-old from Alpington shocked the world number 15 by forcing a tie-break in the first set. And despite his defeat, Bloomfield's performance earned him a wildcard as a qualifier at Wimbledon. Bloomfield came through three rounds of qualifying to set up the match against the French Open quarter-finalist. He has slipped to 376 in the world rankings after enduring a poor 2007 in singles tennis. Gonzalez will now face Russian Marat Safin in the second round of the tournament at Queen's Club.
