Bloomfield was not intimidated by facing Hewitt on Court One

Bloomfield was quickly 5-2 down but the British number four fought his way back and had two break points with the opening set poised at 5-5.

Hewitt, the 16th seed, held on and also claimed the second set with a solitary break as Bloomfield lost his way.

The Australian was pushed in the third but claimed the crucial break in the 11th game to seal a 7-5 6-3 7-5 win.

Meanwhile, Lee Childs' first Wimbledon campaign since 2004 ended in disappointment after a 6-3 6-4 7-6 (8-6) opening-round loss to Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi.

The 25-year-old was broken once in the opening set as a confident Qureshi claimed it in 33 minutes.

Childs did have two break points at the end of the second set but Qureshi managed to hold serve for a 2-0 lead.

The third set was keenly fought but Qureshi never really looked in trouble and won the match in the tie-break.

Qureshi, cheered on by a vocal Pakistan support, had his second match point when Childs fired an approach into the net and won the contest with a deft drop shot.

The 27-year-old, playing in his first Grand Slam singles event, is only the second Pakistani, after Haroon Rahim in 1975 and 1976, to win a men's singles match at Wimbledon.

Joshua Goodall,Jamie Baker and Jonathan Marray also went out at the first hurdle - all losing in straight sets.

Goodall suffered his third successive first round exit as he lost 6-1 6-4 6-4 to Feliciano Lopez, who now faces Tim Henman.

Baker, who went out in the first round on his debut last year, resumed his match with Edouard Roger-Vasselin 2-1 down and went on to lose 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, 6-3.

Marray, like Goodall, also went out in round one for the third year in a row - losing 6-2 7-6 (7-0) 7-5 to Sebastien Grosjean.

Alex Bogdanovic, who is also coached by Lundgren, suffered a sixth successive first-round defeat when he lost 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-4 to Australian Chris Guccione.

Bogdanovic, the British number three enjoying a career-high world ranking of 108, held his serve throughout the first set, which Guccione took 7-2 in the tie-break.

The Briton then double-faulted on break point in the third game of the second set to give his opponent an advantage he never relinquished.
