But seventh seed Jose Acasuso went through, beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 to book his spot in the quarter-finals.
Fifth seed David Ferrer will be Federer's next opponent - the Spaniard beat Czech player Jiri Novak in three sets.
Federer, looking for his 11th title of the season, admitted he felt motivated at the prospect of winning in front of his home crowd.
"I'm playing unbelievable right now," said the Swiss player after his 21st consecutive victory. "The stadium inspired me."
