Roddick struggled in the second set against Greul |
Fourth seed Andy Roddick saw off Tim Henman's conqueror Simon Greul in three sets at the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami. The American won the first set, but wobbled in the second against the German qualifier, before reaching the last eight with a 6-3 3-6 6-2 win.
Croatian Davis Cup team-mates Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic both won in straight sets to reach the quarters.
Top seed Roger Federer swept past Russian world number 36 Dmitry Tursunov with a comfortable 6-3 6-3 victory.
Roddick admitted he had found it hard going against Greul, who is ranked 130th in the world.
"I let him get into a groove in the second set," he said. "He started getting confidence and swung from the hip.
"If I'd let it go any further in the third he would have gained a lot of confidence and momentum. He's an awkward player to compete against."
Roddick, who won in Miami in 2004, has yet to reach a final this season. He will meet David Ferrer in the last eight after the Spaniard beat Belgium's Olivier Rochus in three close sets.
Ancic upset Russian fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko 7-5 6-4, while sixth seed Ljubicic, overwhelmed Olivier's brother, Christophe Rochus, 6-3 6-1.
And in Tuesday's late games, third seed David Nalbandian eased past 15th seed Radek Stepanek in straight sets, and American James Blake came from a set down to beat Juan Ignacio Chela.
