The Swiss star, who also beat Haas at Doha and the Australian Open, beat the German 6-1 6-3.

Earlier, ninth seed James Blake beat Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-3 4-6 6-1.

And fourth seed Andy Roddick breezed past 31st seed Fernando Verdasco 6-3 6-4 to set up a fourth-round match with Tim Henman's conqueror Simon Greul.

Federer said: "I played a really solid match. I started well, hit the ball well and didn't miss much.

"It was tough for Tommy, I didn't give him any easy balls."

Federer is aiming for his 10th ATP Masters Series title and his second consecutive tournament victory after beating Blake at the Pacific Life Open earlier this month.

In other third-round action, 24th seed Igor Andreev was beaten 6-3 1-6 6-4 by fellow Russian Dmitry Tursunov.
