Great Britain lost their penultimate Fed Cup Pool C match 2-1 against Serbia & Montenegro in Turkey on Friday. Katie O'Brien and Jane O'Donoghue won their doubles clash 6-2 6-4.
But Elena Baltacha slipped up 4-6 6-3 6-0 against Ana Timotic and Anne Keothavong lost 2-6 6-3 6-4 to Dragana Zaric to leave GB third in their pool.
Nick Brown's squad, who face Ukraine on Saturday in a dead rubber, retained their Euro-African Zone Group I place with Thursday's 2-1 win over Denmark.
Brown said: "We are a bit disappointed with our latest result but we came up with the goods when we needed to on Thursday.
"Anne and Elena are improving their game on clay and I think this is a true reflection of where we are at the moment.
"We have got to focus on reaching a level where we have a chance of getting out of this group but it is going to take time.
"Most countries here have at least one player in the top 100 so that is the first thing we have to do to give ourselves a chance."
