Defending champion Maria Sharapova reached the quarter-finals of the DFS Classic in Birmingham with victory over Samatha Stosur on Thursday. The top seed did not have it all her own way, dropping the second set before coming through 6-3 3-6 6-1.
Sharapova goes on to face Greece's Eleni Daniilidou, who beat Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-3 6-3.
In other matches, Russia's Anna Chakvetadze beat sixth seed Shinobu Asagoe of Japan 6-4 6-4.
Tamarine Tanasugarn edged out Stephanie Foretz 2-6 6-3 6-3, and Laura Granville battled past fellow American Jamea Jackson 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
