Elena Baltacha won her first ever match at the DFS Classic in Birmingham on Monday with an impressive performance against Alyona Bondarenko. The British number one came through 7-6 (9-7) 6-1 to gain revenge over the Ukrainian, who has beaten her twice in the last two months.
"I was determined to beat her on grass, which is my favourite surface," said Baltacha. "I wanted a bit of revenge."
Fellow Briton Amanda Janes lost 3-6 6-1 7-6 (7-5) to Japan's Akiko Morigami.
Janes squandered four match points in a desperately disappointing loss to the world number 61.
Former British number one Anne Keothavong plays Laura Granville of the US on Tuesday.
Maria Sharapova will begin the defence of her title against Anne Kremer of Luxembourg, who beat Ukraine's Tatiana Perebiynis 7-5 6-2.

Sharapova, whose entry has broken box-office records at Edgbaston, partnered Maria Kirilenko in the doubles on Monday but lost 6-4 6-0 to Marion Bartoli and Tamarine Tanasugarn.
India's Sania Mirza booked her place in the last 32 thanks to a routine 6-2 6-0 win over Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg.
Anna-Lena Groenefeld, the 13th seed from Germany, became the tournament's first notable casualty when she lost 6-4 6-3 to American Stephanie Foretz.
France's Virginie Razzano, the 11th seed, was a 6-4 7-6 winner over Carly Gullickson, of the United States.
The top 10 seeds are not in action until Tuesday, with the exception of Elena Likhovtseva, who has withdrawn with a thigh injury.
