Second seed Alicia Molik was knocked out of Birmingham's DFS Classic in the second round on Wednesday. The Australian lost in straight sets, 6-4 6-2, to American Laura Granville, with ninth seed Marion Bartoli losing 6-3 6-0 to Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn.
Slovak number seven seed Daniela Hantuchova was defeated in a three-set marathon with Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-4 6-7(7-3) 7-6 (7-5).
British number one Elena Baltacha lost 6-4 6-2 to Venezuelan Milagros Sequera.
Baltacha, ranked higher than the qualifier, had high hopes of reaching the last 16, but her booming serve misfired.
"It was a very difficult match," Baltacha said. "I served pretty well in the first set and had quite a few break points.
"Maybe things would have changed if I had won the first set, but she read everything that I tried to do and she was so quick.
"My serve percentage went down in the second set and she got on top of me."
France's Tatiana Golovin survived a scare against the unfancied Natalia Grandin to book her place in the third round of the DFS Classic in Birmingham.
Moscow-born Golovin, the runner-up last year, eventually edged her rival 6-4 7-5 in the 90-minute contest.
Grandin, the world number 203, took a 2-0 lead in the second set before Golovin turned around the contest.
Golovin had a chance to round the match off when serving 5-4 up in the second set only to miss out.
She got another chance at 6-5 with which she made no mistake.
