Spanish seventh seed Juan Carlos Ferrero was beaten 6-4 7-6 (7/4) by Frenchman Fabrice Santoro.
American second seed Andy Roddick was given a good second-set workout by Spain's Feliciano Lopez before winning 6-3 7-6 (7/5).
Fourth seed Carlos Moya of Spain saw off America's Alex Bogomolov Jr 6-4 6-3, while Australian ninth seed Lleyton Hewitt beat Czech Jiri Novak 6-2 6-1.
In other matches, Germany's Nicolas Kiefer progressed with a 6-3 6-1 win over Spain's David Ferrer.
