Tim Henman's hopes at the Toronto Masters were ended by a straight-sets loss to Gustavo Kuerten on Thursday. Kuerten took one hour 43 minutes to beat the British number one 7-5 6-4 in the second round tie.
The former world number one survived two early scares before breaking Henman at 5-5 on the way to the first set.
The Brazilian went from strength to strength in the next set, sealing the match with a dazzling array of serves and passing shots.
Kuerten, who hit 12 aces during the dramatic encounter, is set to play Jan Hernych in a few hours time as tournament organisers look to make up for rain delays in the first few days of the event.
The Toronto Masters is part of the North American 'hard court swing' and is seen as one of the warm-up tournaments for next month's US Open, which starts on 30 August.
Henman's next appearance could be at the Cincinnati Masters next week.
