Third seed Amelie Mauresmo delighted the home crowd with a straight-sets win over Arantxa Parra Santonja in the third round of the French Open. The French player looked full of confidence as she made her experience tell against her Spanish opponent who was making her debut in the main draw.
The 24-year-old Mauresmo, looking for her first Grand Slam title, wrapped up a 6-3 6-2 victory in 67 minutes.
She will play 21st seed Magdalena Maleeva in the fourth round.
The veteran Bulgarian beat American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3 7-6 (6-3)
The biggest upset of the day in the women's draw was Marlene Weingartner dumping eighth seed Nadia Petrova out.
Petrova, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year, beat Weingartner 6-0 6-0 when she last played her.
But the Russian made 29 unforced errors this time and slumped to defeat in just 71 minutes.
In contrast, Weingartner produced a powerful and controlled performance to earn a fourth-round match against 18th seed Maria Sharapova.
Sharapova, 17, continued her impressive progress by beating 10th seed Vera Zvonareva 6-3 7-6 (7/3) on Centre Court.
In other third-round action, fifth seed Lindsay Davenport made light work of Marissa Irvin to advance.
The American prevailed 6-1 6-4 against her compatriot.
Ninth seed Elena Dementieva advanced to the fourth round when her opponent Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi retired in the third set.
