Lindsay Davenport won the Porsche Grand Prix in Filderstadt after Amelie Mauresmo retired injured in the final. American Davenport began superbly, breaking her opponent in the first game and then held her own service to love.
But at 3-1 down, world number one Mauresmo needed an injury time-out for treatment on her left thigh.
Her movement thereafter was restricted and after second seed Davenport broke again and won the first set 6-2, French player Mauresmo conceded defeat.
It was Davenport's second title at Filderstadt in her third final yet despite the American's victory, Mauresmo will stay on top of the world rankings.
But world number two Davenport will have the chance to move up to the top spot at next week's Kremlin Cup in Moscow, in which both players are entered.
"There's not a whole lot of joy winning a match like that," admitted Davenport after collecting the keys to a new Porsche and a cheque for 55,000. The American, who has now won seven titles in 2004, brushed aside speculation that she is to retire at the end of the year.
"I thought about it quite a bit earlier in the year but the last few months, I've started to enjoy it more. We'll see," she said.
