Mauresmo breezes through
Amelie Mauresmo
Amelie Mauresmo comfortably came through her first match since taking over at the top of the world rankings.

The Frenchwoman reached the quarter-finals of the Porsche Grand Prix in Filderstadt with a 7-5 6-4 win over Switzerland's Patty Schynder.

"I am really enjoying being number one - people have been congratulating me in France," she said.

However American Lindsay Davenport could replace Mauresmo at the top of the world rankings this week.

Davenport moved into the last eight with a 6-1 6-0 demolition of Australian Alicia Molik on Wednesday.

Third seed Anastasia Myskina is also through to the quarter-finals after a battling 4-6 6-2 6-1 win over France's Nathalie Dechy.

Fabiola Zuluaga's task was made easier when Israel's Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi retired while trailing 4-6 0-1.

America's Lisa Raymond progressed with a 6-7 (3/7) 7-6 (7/6) 6-0 win over Silvia Farina Elia of Italy.

Russia's Elena Likhovtseva also came back from losing the first set to beat Mary Pierce of France 0-6 6-4 6-3.

In an all-Russian battle, fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova got the better of Elena Bovina, winning 7-5, 6-4.
