Top seed Silvia Farina Elia of Italy reached the quarter-finals of the Bell Challenge in Quebec with a 6-1 6-4 victory over American Laura Granville. The 30-year-old Italian, who received a first-round bye, is having her best season after fourth-round finishes at the French and US Opens. Elsewhere, second seed Elena Dementieva fell in three sets to Germany's Angelika Roesch. Roesch, ranked 80th in the world, in two hours and 40 minutes. The loss marked a continuation of a slump for Dementieva. Since reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon she has failed to progress past the second round in four of five events. She has now lost six of her last eight matches. Her exit followed that of fifth seed and defending Meghann Shaughnessy who crashed out 6-4 6-4 to Switzerland's Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian. Third seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria will face Mikaelian in the last eight after beating South African Anousjka Van Exel 6-4 2-6 6-3. Second seed Elena Dementieva of Russia plays Angelika Roesch of Germany on Wednesday night. In the remaining first-round matches, seventh seed Elena Bovina of Russia beat Jana Nejedly of Canada while eighth seed Meilen Tu fought back to defeat Brie Rippner 2-6 7-6 6-1. Paraguay's Rossana Neffa-De Los Rios was another comeback winner against German Greta Arn, amd her 0-6 7-6 7-6 won sets up a clash with sixth seed Alexandra Stevenson. |
