United appeared to be back on track as they won a stunning 4 - 0 victory over Wigan at Old Trafford.

Thirty minutes into the game Rio Ferdinand open United's account with his first ever goal for the club.

Five minutes later saw some great footwork from Wayne Rooney, as he weaved his way into Wigan's area and, somehow managing to keep his composure, drilled in a low ball despite previously being wrestled to the floor.

Regardless of their comfortable 2-0 lead going into the second half, United came out once again with all guns blazing and Van Nistelrooy struck a close-range shot to force a good save from Pollitt.

On 56 minutes, Rooney bagged his second goal of the night with a nice little chip over the keeper's head into an open Wigan goal.

Despite being 3-0 down, Wigan still managed to create some chances but just seemed unable to capitalise on them.

Following a late United substitution of Ferdinand for Bardsley, Van Nistlerooy got onto the end of a superb through ball from Giggs and was brought down by the Latics keeper just inside the Wigan area.

To put the icing on the cake, the Dutchman kept a cool head and placed the ball confidently into the back of the Wigan net.

It was a chilly night at Old Trafford. There were over 67,000 fans in the stadium.

In the opening 10 minutes both teams played well, but then it went downhill for the Latics.

Darren Fletcher's goal was offside and disallowed. The United fans were not impressed.

Pollit saved quite a few attempts at goal.

Then United got their first goal. Ferdinand scored half-an-hour into the game -the crowd went mad.

Rooney then extended the lead on 34 minutes. He fell over and in the blink of an eye got back on his feet and scored.

The Latics attempted a few goals but did not succeed. At half-time they still showed optimism and there was the possibility of equalising, but this was soon squashed.

Rooney then got the third goal at 55 minutes and the Latics fans looked defeated.

At 70 minutes United were awarded a penalty. Van Nistelrooy took it and scored.

Although the Latics fought until the very end, this particular match will not be one to remember, even though it was their first ever trip to Old Trafford.
