Everton Manager David Moyes arrived on the south coast extremely confident of becoming the first team since February to take three points from Portsmouth to end their reign of home wins.
It would be shocking if the smallest team in the Premiership can defeat a giant team like Everton and they didn't.
Everton left with their third well deserved 1-0 victory in succession.
There was an early glimpse of light in the 13th minute when Quashie came down the left hand side, gave a cracking right foot shot, but it bounced off the post dashing Pompey's hopes.
Even before Quashie rattled the woodwork, Everton had been desperately close when Watson sneaked in on the other end of Kilbane's cross and shot just wide of the goal.
Pompey tried to open things up by a Faye and Yakubu hit but it was a miss, hitting Martyn's side netting.
They did that by getting into danger areas but were not able to penetrate enough.
The second-half introduction of Lua Lua for Berkovic livened things up and the opposition's defence needed to be more aggressive than they had been.
 Everton's players celebrate Cahill's goal |
Pompey brought on Kamara for Fuller but with the ball coming up against a big force field when it went anywhere near the white lines of the Everton area, the full might of their defence would not have been able to penetrate into the area.
Portsmouth's Kamara hauled back Hibbert to give Everton's Gravesen the chance to float a ball over to Cahill.
Cahill managed to get over Griffin to nod Everton into a cracking lead.
That was the 80th minute and there was nothing Pompey could do in the remaining ten minutes that could save them.
This time the Pompey net remained empty. For all those who came to the game for another feast for Pompey to win, it was dashed.
