| Monday, 21 October, 2002, 09:51 GMT 10:51 UK Salute Glenn McGrath ![]() Australia's Glenn McGrath becomes only the eighth bowler in Test history to pass the 400-wicket mark. Send your tributes to one of the all-time greats. McGrath joined the exclusive club when trapping Pakistani captain Waqar Younis lbw for six on the third morning of the final Test.
McGrath, who finished with figures of 4 for 41, is only the second Australian to achieve the feat after team-mate Shane Warne. The 32-year-old will now have one eye on Courtney Walsh at the top of the list of all-time wicket-takers - the West Indian took 519 in a long and illustrious career. This debate is now closed I would certainly salute McGrath but he can also be smashed out of the park. He may be accurate, but he bowls in the same spot every delivery and the likes of Tendulkar, Sehwag, Ganguly, Dravid, Jayasuriya, Trescothick and Akram could easily demolish him. Tendulkar has displayed this on numerous occasions and in the Calcutta Test in India in March 2001 against Australia. Against Laxman, McGrath didn't have a clue. Glenn McGrath - the perfect fusion of durability, metronomic accuracy and controlled aggression. Wish he was English. He is the Steve Waugh of bowling: he sticks to his strengths (line, length and seam) and disregards the rest. Would have love to say him bowl at Sir Viv or come with his sledging tactics around the great one. He would have gone back from whence he came long ago. However, congratulations and we hope you never overtake the great Courtney Walsh.
Congratulations on achieving the mile stone. He is one of the greatest fast bowler the cricket fans have ever seen. He has taken 400 wickets in a short span of only nine years. he will surely break the record of 519 wickets and will set a record of 600 wickets for followers As the world doffs their hats to a truly great bowler, Glenn thanks Michael Atherton for 381 of his wickets! I rate Walsh well above Glenn as far as the true sportsmanship is concerned because Glenn sledges a lot. So I will not give 100% to him - Sorry! Glenn McGrath is indeed an awesome bowler, who has hit many milestones in his life. To see him firing all cylinders is a marvel but one should consider his remarks in the field especially against Sri Lankans. I am sure he is a great bowler - but not a great gentleman. Ooh-ahh Glenn McGrath, I say ooh-ahh Glenn McGrath! Well done mate! You make the art of fast bowling a pleasure to watch. As an avid Pakistan supporter, I have to take my hat off to a fantastic bowler who has throughout his career bowled consistently. McGrath well deserves his 400th wicket; he is a role model for wannabe bowlers. Glenn is a classic example that demonstrates big success comes from hard work and dedication. Talent counts but is not everything. I am sure all of us will agree that Glenn is not the most talented or bowls unplayable beauties like Lille, Warne or Akhtar.
Glenn bowls within the fundamentals of fast bowling, bowls with an amazing accuracy, remarkable consistency, and has a very aggressive and positive attitude towards bowling. I would love to see him at 500. BR> Dig, Japan Glenn McGrath (and the Australian team in general) plays hard and the occasional verbal is part of the deal. But they acknowledge their opponents strengths as well as exploiting their weaknesses. And after the game is over there is no rubbing of noses in the dirt - only rubbing of shoulders in the bar. That to me is not bad sportsmanship. McGrath is the sort of bowler that anyone should aspire to be. He bowls consistently on a line and length and forces the batsman into errors due to his nagging persistence, as well as the occasional unplayable ball. Glenn McGrath is what Sir Richard Hadlee was and what Shaun Pollock promises to become: A slayer of batting masters. Without question the most intelligent fast bowler presently playing. If he possessed a greater sense of sportsmanship - and didn't also employ sledging and other intimidation tactics - I would also respect him as a sportsman.
Hats off to McGrath... and tissues ready for the Ashes tour. England are up against not one, but two of the all-time top 10 bowlers. Good luck boys: you'll face no greater test than this. When it comes to out-thinking the batsman McGrath takes the cake. No one does it better and his "Mental Disintegration" of opposing players is always interesting to watch. Personally I'm not a fan of his bowling due to the fact it is boring (his team-mates agree) and he doesn't do much with the ball, which is why he won't come close to Ambrose, Akram and Warne as the best bowlers over the past 10-12 years. Congrats Glenn McGrath! I have been lucky enough to witness the whole career of one of the best fast bowlers of my era. The biggest asset of McGrath is that he targets the best batsmen in the opposition camp and has been successful on all occasions. The only time I don't support McGrath is when he bowls against India. Otherwise, he is my favourite fast bowler. He has long been a champion of the current era - now I think that he can justifiably be regarded as a champion of any era!
He is one of the accurate bowlers in the world. He bowls exceptionally well against Pakistan, England and West Indies. Let us see who will be his next target - maybe Michel Vaughan? What a wonderful achievement. The word consistency was made just to describe McGrath's bowling. Let's hope he will ease up a bit now for the winter! Congratulations on achieving a mile stone. He is one of the greatest fast bowlers the world has ever seen. He is achieved the mile stone in a period of just nine years. He will break all the records. I wish him all the best for his future goals. 500 is not that far off now!! I am really impressed with your accuracy and I anticipate every ball you bowl to get a wicket. I hope you go on for a few more years like this.
Nice one Glenn, just PLEASE do not add too much to the tally this winter!!!! You are an icon of true fast bowling! Keep going with your good job Glenn-you will surpass Courtney's record in no time. The coming Ashes series will be a golden opportunity. Congratulations!! Glenn McGrath is streets ahead of the rest, as the PWC rankings have shown for years. How about a few months' well-earned rest this winter? Glenn is a total legend and the best fast bowler I have ever seen. Wait for the winter when he will end up over the 430 mark. He'll go on from strength to strength and good luck to him. He is such a genuine bloke.
Congratulations on the big 400, but I have to add, speaking as an Englishman, here's hoping you get battered all over the park this winter! The most outstandingly consistent pace bowler of his generation. Barring injury I am sure he will prove to be England's nemesis once again this winter. As much as I hope you fail to take wickets this winter against England, I can only take my hat off and salute probably the most consistent fast bowler I have ever seen. It is truly a pleasure to watch an expert artfully exploit his talent - I shall look forward to watching you this winter! He's mean. He's accurate. He's aggressive. He never forgets a transgression against him. He's been the world's best fast bowler for nearly a decade. Worst of all, he's not English. A fantastic role-model for bowlers. One of the greatest. Respect and nothing else! What a legend! With plenty still in the tank he will be taking plenty more scalps (look out the Poms!)
Fantastic achievement from a fantastic bowler. Let's hope the Aussies keep producing players like him. I must say Glenn McGrath has the most fluent action of any bowler I have seen in my lifetime. I rate him as easily the best bowler I have seen. Congratulations Mr McGrath. Aussie Legend! Good work mate, see you on the 7th! You are one of the top bowlers I have seen. Sunil Gavaskar once said that if you are woken up in the middle of the night and asked to bowl, you would bowl just as straight as you normally do. An easy action, a very tight line and length and subtle variation have taken you this far and there's no doubt in my mind that you will achieve much more in years to come. You along with Warne have been a bridge between two generations of Australian bowling and I wish you all the very best. McGrath has proved that you don't need to bowl immensely fast all the time to be a successful pace bowler. He uses his brain and consistent line and length to get batsmen out. I hope young English bowlers are taking notice!
What can you say about the most accurate bowler in the world? He is one of the reason the Aussie are miles ahead the rest. He is also the model we have used in developing bowlers here in Nigeria. Long may his reign as the 'world's best pace bowler' last. Congrats McGrath for your 400 wickets landmark. The speciality McGrath. He is very successful for getting wickets and is a very fit and bowler. I hope he carries on his performance in the World Cup as well. Nice one Glenn! It's been a pleasure to have watched you perform throughout your Test history. You are the finest pace bowler of modern times. I want you to aim at 500 as next target! |
