| Tuesday, 2 July, 2002, 22:07 GMT 23:07 UK Salute New Zealand New Zealand follow their first ever Test Victory in the West Indies by winning the series 1-0. Congratulate the Kiwis on their historic triumph. Stephen Fleming's side were 256-5 in their second innings when rain brought play to a close on the fifth and final day in Grenada. The occasion was all the more memorable for all-rounder Scott Styris, who became only the tenth player in Test history mark his debut with a century followed by a fifty. The Kiwis looked nervous early on in the day; adding just 58 runs for the loss of three key wickets, but Styris and Robbie Hart steadied the ship before the rain intervened. Salute New Zealand, and Styris, on their historic Test triumph. I followed the Kiwis here in Australia last year and it was apparent to all that this is a team on the rise. Australia struggled with the pace and accuracy of Bond, whilst our bowlers soon realised that reputation counts for nothing as they were arrogantly flayed to all corners. In Chris Cairns they have the most exciting individual in world cricket today, but the most important point is that they play as a team and teamwork generally defeats individual performances. Well done to the Kiwis, it looks like selection consistency and nurturing the young guns through greats such as Richard Hadlee and Co is finally paying off. As for the West Indies, the reason they're not watching it cause they are still harping on about the golden days of W.I cricket in the 70's and 80's.
I congratulate New Zealand for the series victory, but they still have long way before they can be compared with Australia, South Africa or Pakistan. Unless they win on the Indian sub-continent we cannot treat them as great - look at them how they got thrashed in Pakistan inside three days. I rate England higher than New Zealand The young middle order of the New Zealand team played bravely to draw the Test. This team is fast emerging into a world-beating unit, and they are realising their potential. They have two very good all-rounders in Scott Styris and Chris Carins, and a class bowler in Shane Bond. No wonder they are regarded as dark horses in the forthcoming World Cup. As disappointing as the West Indies has been performing for a long time I can't help feeling we still stand a chance of beating Fleming and his band. I believe Lara, Chanderpaul and Hooper will make centuries and lead the way to victory. At least I can't help hoping so. I fondly recall Clive Lloyd and his all conquering men. Then Vivian Richards. What have we come to?
I'm sick of people saying that NZ have no star players. The Indian side are only "superstars" because they have almost a billion people harping on about how good they are. We have three million and could care less. If Shane Bond and Nathan Astle aren't stars of world cricket, then very few current players are. Certainly not the Indians who are hopeless away from home. Gareth Dixon, NZ I wonder if the ones saying West Indies were going to lose in Grenada saw the One Day International series the Windies played against the Kiwis? Brian Lara and company could have destroyed Fleming and McMillan's team 5-0. New Zealand lost 3-1! Yes,the first test at Kensington was lost to the visiting side, but West Indies know what is at stake here and will play well to steer New Zealand to where they belong in test cricket! This New Zealand side has yet to reach its potential and if they can improve their accuracy whilst bowling they will be a tough side to beat. The West Indies will have a harder resolve to win this next Test, which should make this a very close affair. Sadly this West Indies team is incapable of winning the next Test. On one side we have a team, that is disciplined, committed, and one that takes great pride in playing for its country, a team of substance, a team which takes its cricket seriously. On the other side we have a team of over-paid glamour boys, with no serious commitment to anything. I choose the former to always come out on top.
West Indies to loose this Test. This team lack all the essential ingredients to be a successful side. They have found a comfort zone and are quite contended to remain in it. Moving forward will mean discipline, blood, sweat and tears, and a commitment to the cause as Sir Viv used to say. However this team seems to present an allergic reaction when presented with these ideals. The Kiwis are not good enough to see off the Windies. We'll crush 'em in the next Test. Hooper is my hero! I want to see him, Lara, Chanderpaul and Jacobs make centuries! I'll tell you something, I live in the Caribbean and no one is even watching this series on TV. A Test was played at Kensington Oval and the stands were empty. No one cares to see New Zealand play cricket. The general consensus is that they have no star players, no Tendulkar, Dravid, Harbajan, Kumble, etc. A Shoaib Athkar would fill Kensington Oval on his own! No one here in the Caribbean is willing to go and see Steve Fleming and Chris Harris bat. Sad but true. We all want to see Brazil v Germany in the final of the World Cup! I think Fleming and the boys should rap this one up and make history. We have not lost a Test series home or away for two years. We have no depth in our cricket and have been injury ravaged as our top talent are continually playing. This is what makes our recent performances quite remarkable. We rely on a good work ethic, pride and making the most of our opportunities. The recent Pakistan series was an aberration as most of the team had the Karachi squirts. The West Indies played well to beat India but when was the last time India won away from home anyway?
The West Indies won't win in Grenada because, as the Aussies and English found out, the current team is too professional. The lesson which everyone has been slow to learn is underestimate the Kiwis at your peril. Show some respect and the Windies may have a chance. West Indies will crush New Zealand in the second Test. The Windies thought the Kiwis were easy to beat up and did not go into the first Test with enough strength to rip New Zealand. Come the second Test, the West Indies is going to show the visitors why the Caribbean is so tough even against the best in the world, with a clear innings and a hundred and so runs defeat. I don't believe the West Indies will defeat New Zealand in the next Test and seeing this crowd perform, I doubt very much if they actually care anyhow. What our cricket board should do is institute a pay-cut and then pay people according to performance. I am quite confident that the Windies will defeat the Kiwis in the second Test in Grenada. I believe that they possess the fight to level the series. They came from behind and defeated the Indians, and there is absolutely no reason why this cannot be repeated against New Zealand.
This West Indies team is a total embarrassment to all true West Indians. There is no pride, no discipline, and no commitment to the cause. As a matter of fact, they don't care one hell about West Indians. Money and looking good is the important thing to them, not the position of West Indies cricket in the eyes of the world. The win against India spoke more to India's weakness away from home than any resurgence of West Indies cricket. The Windies have two chances in Grenada - slim and no chance, and slim just left town. Looks like Hooper will have to find another corner to turn, before his team become a pale imitation of the all conquering 80's Windies team. And that isn't happening sometime soon. Even though New Zealand's win in the first Test came against a weary West Indies side, they more than justify their place in the world Test rankings. Stephen Fleming leads a talented side and with batsmen like Nathan Astle and Craig McMillan, the thrilling pace of Shane Bond and the guile of Daniel Vettori, my money is on them for a historic series win in the Carribean. The only thing in their way is the flair of a Brian Lara or perhaps, and look out for this young lad in a small matter of ten years, Ramnaresh Sarwan! |
