Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who had earlier retired hurt after being whacked by a Shane Bond ball, rushed back from hospital to blast the winning run off the last ball. The victory gave the West Indies a 3-1 win in the five-match series, although Fleming said incompetence from match officials had cheated his team of victory. He was upset because specialist one-day bowler Paul Hitchcock was prevented from taking the ball for the last over because of a scoreboard error. Hitchcock had only bowled nine overs but the scoreboard indicated he had completed his 10-over spell. That meant Fleming had to call upon medium pacer Daryl Tuffey, who had already been hit for 33 runs from four overs. And the West Indies took full advantage, cracking the 15 runs they needed to clinch both the match and the series. "There were a whole lot of problems with the scoreboard throughout the day," said Fleming. "Both umpires admitted pretty much that they made a mistake and it's just basic incompetence, which the match referee agrees with. "We have had a formal meeting with the umpires in terms of my disgust at their incompetence. The match referee will deal with it accordingly. "The bottom line is that it's hurt us and left more of a sour taste than was already there."
Fleming's reaction took the gloss off a thrilling match, in which the West Indies scored their second highest total to win a match. New Zealand looked to have set a winning total on Sunday when Stephen Fleming (65), Craig McMillan (83) and Lou Vincent (55) clubbed the West Indies bowling to all corners of the ground. Set 291, the West Indies made their usual flamboyant start, scoring 60 from the first 10 overs before Chanderpaul was struck on the forearm by a 90mph Bond delivery. After Chanderpaul left the field for x-rays, Brian Lara and Chris Gayle put on 67 before Gayle was caught. Lara made 47 but and skipper Carl Hooper added a lusty 45 in 38 balls before 21-year-old Ramnaresh Sarwan scored 52, taking the West Indies to within 31 runs of victory. Late drama But Ryan Hinds' 49th-over dismissal left them requiring 17 runs from 10 balls to win the match. Enter Chanderpaul for his dramatic finale. Needing 15 from the last over, Chanderpaul took centre stage, smashing three consecutive fours from friendly half volleys. With the scores tied on the last ball, Fleming brought his field up and Chanderpaul casually flicked Tuffey's loose final delivery into the crowd of thousands of supporters rushing on to the field. "I wasn't too sure if I would be able to come back on because I couldn't pick up my bat after it happened," said Chanderpaul. "The doctor said it was just bruising, although he has sent the X-ray for a second opinion."
