| Sunday, 9 June, 2002, 22:19 GMT 23:19 UK Lara leads Windies rout West Indies took three vital wickets for five runs Third one-day international, St Lucia: New Zealand 210-7 (50 overs) v West Indies 211-3 (40 overs) West Indies win by seven wickets Brian Lara hit an aggressive unbeaten 59 to lead West Indies to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in St Lucia. With one match having been abandoned, West Indies now have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series. New Zealand, comprehensively outplayed in Sunday's defeat, began by batting poorly, with their 210 in 50 overs at least 50 runs short of a competitive target. Their opening bowlers then crumbled in the face of a withering assault from Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who put on 33 in the first five overs.
Chanderpaul followed his unbeaten 108 in Saturday's match with a cavalier 30, while Gayle made 37. Lara, restored to his usual number four slot, then joined Ramnaresh Sarwan to put on a match-winning 77 for the third wicket. Sarwan was trapped lbw by Chris Harris for an elegant 42, but Lara then took control, hitting five fours and a mighty six. His 48th one-day half-century came in 73 balls as he turned in a man-of-the-match performance that saw his team home with 10 overs to spare. West Indies' task with the bat had been made easier by the way their seam and spin bowling attack had earlier strangled the New Zealand innings. Big hitter The Black Caps lost three top batsmen for five runs after captain Stephen Fleming (34) and Chris Nevin (20) had given the tourists a healthy start. They plunged from 69 for one to 74 for four before veteran campaigner Harris compiled a 90-run partnership with Test opener Lou Vincent. Harris scored his 15th one-day 50 off 78 balls, while Vincent top-scored with 60. His half-century came off 75 deliveries. West Indies fast medium-seamer Corey Collymore took two wickets for 38 runs while standing in for the rested Cameron Cuffy. And strike bowler Merv Dillon showed improved form to take two for 40 from his 10 overs. New Zealand's renowned big-hitter, Nathan Astle, failed for the third consecutive innings when he was given out lbw for 12. |
