Lara, restored to his usual number four slot, then joined Ramnaresh Sarwan to put on a match-winning 77 for the third wicket.

Sarwan was trapped lbw by Chris Harris for an elegant 42, but Lara then took control, hitting five fours and a mighty six.

His 48th one-day half-century came in 73 balls as he turned in a man-of-the-match performance that saw his team home with 10 overs to spare.

West Indies' task with the bat had been made easier by the way their seam and spin bowling attack had earlier strangled the New Zealand innings.
