Arsenal picked the perfect stage to shift the Premiership's power base - winning the title with victory at Manchester United.

It came four days after their FA Cup Final win against Chelsea at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and clinched another domestic double for Arsene Wenger's team.

The victory on the turf of their fiercest rivals was an almost symbolic gesture of supremacy, with United's title taken away before their eyes by Sylvain Wiltord's winner.

Freddie Ljungberg put the FA Cup final beyond Chelsea after Ray Parlour had broken the deadlock.

Their 2-0 win confirmed Arsenal as team of the season, with their brilliant attacking brand of football deserving their success.

It was a rare empty-handed season for Sir Alex Ferguson's men - with the Scot's hopes of winning a second Champions League Final in his home city of Glasgow wrecked by Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-final.

The Germans also ended Liverpool's hopes, and the possibility of an all-English semi-final, with a 4-3 aggregate win in the last eight.

Klaus Toppmoller's men had no answer to Real Madrid in the final at Hampden Park, Zinedine Zidane's brilliant strike sealing a 2-1 victory.

Liverpool finished second in the Premiership, a remarkable achievement after manager Gerard Houllier was taken seriously ill during a home match against Leeds in October 2001.

Houllier underwent 11 hours of life-saving emergency heart surgery, leaving assistant Phil Thompson to take the reins for six months before his return for the Champions League victory against AS Roma.

The other English domestic honour, the Worthington Cup, was claimed by Graeme Souness' Blackburn Rovers.

Andy Cole delivered a hefty repayment on the �8m handed over to Manchester United early in the season by scoring the decider in a 2-1 win against Tottenham in Cardiff.

In Scotland, honours were shared, with Celtic claiming another SPL title.

Rangers won the CIS Insurance Cup by beating Ayr United 4-1, but they demonstrated the clearest sign of their revival under Alex McLeish with a dramatic 3-2 win against Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park.

Former England manager Kevin Keegan was back in business as he guided Manchester City into the Premiership.

And Gary Megson performed a masterly feat of management to take West Bromwich Albion back into the top flight, where they were joined by Midlands neighbours Birmingham City.

Europe's other major trophy, the Uefa Cup, went to Feyenoord of Holland, who beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in the final.
