Bulldozers have finally moved in as work begins on building the new Wembley stadium.

Construction staff spent a symbolic 13 minutes at the site ahead of full-scale demolition, which begins on Thursday.

The deal for the �757m national stadium was finally agreed last week after years of delays.

The new 90,000-seater stadium in north London is due to open in 2006.

Part of the development will see the renovation of Wembley Park Underground station to allow it to handle 40,000 people per hour.

It is expected to take six months to demolish the existing stadium before the bulk of the work on building the new arena can begin.

The ongoing Wembley saga has been running for some eight years and has been held up by politics and financial hitches.

But there are high hopes that the problems are now a thing of the past and everything is in place to build what the FA believe will be the finest stadium in the world.

Wembley's famous twin towers will be replaced by a 'triumphant arch', which helps operate a mobile roof.

The stadium will also be able to stage athletics by installing a removable running track, which will cut the capacity to 68,400.
