McBryde and Jenkins will be with Wales until the 2011 World Cup |
Assistant coaches Neil Jenkins and Robin McBryde have signed contract extensions that will keep them with Wales until the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Former world record Test points scorer Jenkins has overall responsibility for kicking and McBryde is forwards coach. Head coach Warren Gatland said he was keen to keep the same backroom staff who helped him to win the Grand Slam in his first season in charge of Wales. "Both Neil and Robin are young, talented coaches," Gatland said. "They will offer a long-term benefit to the game in Wales and I have very much enjoyed working with both of them in my first season in charge. "It's great for me to have been able to keep all the coaching staff together from a good Six Nations tournament and credit needs to go to the WRU [Welsh Rugby Union] executive management team who have ensured that is possible." | 606: DEBATE |
The next task for Gatland and his team is to tour against world champions South Africa in June, with defence coach Shaun Edwards and backs coach Rob Howley already on board. On Tuesday, Gatland named a 24-man training squad that is likely to form the core of the squad for the two-Test tour that sees clashes with the Springboks in Bloemfontein on 7 June, then at Loftus Versfeld a week later. London Irish's 22-year-old scrum-half Warren Fury is summoned for the first time, as Mike Phillips is on the long-term injury list while Dwayne Peel is also doubtful with a shoulder injury. Wing Mark Jones (groin) and centre Gavin Henson (ankle) both require surgery and might also be ruled out of facing South Africa. The Springboks have their own problems as flanker Schalk Burger has knee ligament trouble, while Bryan Habana, Bakkies Botha and Wynand Olivier have threatened to go on strike over a contract dispute.
