A blistering first-half display from the Newport Gwent Dragons gave them their first Magners League victory of the new season.

The Dragons led 23-3 at the break thanks to tries from prop Rhys Thomas and wing Gareth Wyatt.

The Scarlets did come back into it with two tries of their own after the break.

But scrum-half Andy Williams, who was making his Dragons debut, scored late on to secure the victory for Paul Turner's side.

The Dragons started brightly, with prop Rhys Thomas powering over from close range for the opening try of the game after only a minute.

Referee James Jones created history at the same time, requiring the use of television match official Tony Rowlands, to confirm that Thomas had in fact grounded the ball.

It was the first time such a facility had been used in the Magners League.

Outside-half Aled Thomas added the extras and minutes later he sent over his side's first penalty of the evening.

While the Dragons looked impressive in the early stages of the game, the Scarlets in contrast looked ragged and rusty and with only 10 minutes on the clock the visitors from Gwent had their second try.

Wing Wyatt scored it, intercepting Ceiron Thomas' loose pass just inside his own half, to run home between the posts unchallenged for 15-0.

Thomas sent over the conversion, and a penalty soon after and with 19 minutes on the clock, the Dragons had a 20-0 lead.

However, the Scarlets soon sprang into life and the west Walians started to exert some pressure on the Dragons' defence which in turn led to ill-discipline from Turner's men.

Ceiron Thomas made amends for his loose pass earlier in the game by scoring his side's first points, sending over a penalty after the Dragons had been caught offside.

His namesake Aled Thomas cancelled this out though just before half-time to give his side a 20-point advantage at the break.

The Scarlets needed to score first to make a game of it and Garan Evans duly obliged, diving over in the corner after a flowing three-quarter move by the home backs.

Thomas converted and Phil Davies' men were back in the game.

And on 50 minutes there was even more joy for the home support, with second-half replacement Iestyn Thomas bundling over from close range following a decent drive from the Scarlets pack, off the back of a line-out.

With 25 minutes remaining the Dragons lost their outside-half Aled Thomas to the sin-bin and with Ceiron Thomas sending over the resulting penalty the deficit was just three points.

The Dragons refused to wilt and came firing back with a try of their own on the hour.

Former Ospreys and Bath scrum-half Andy Williams scored it, with referee Jones again requiring the use of the TMO to confirm the ball had been grounded.

With Thomas off the park, centre Phil Dolman sent over the conversion to give the Dragons a 10-point advantage.

Ceiron Thomas did narrow this lead to seven points but the Dragons held on to claim their first Magners League victory of the new season

  • Scarlets boss Phil Davies:
"This is a different season and a different team from last season.

"We made changes for this game and we didn't play anywhere near our best.

"We will need to work harder and get things right.

  • Dragons boss Paul Turner:
"We lost six games last season narrowly because we had a lack of experience and didn't know how to close a game out.

"We were so tactically aware and that is really pleasing for me."
