Jones made a try-scoring return for the Ospreys

The Ospreys beat a Regional Select XV 25-15 in a behind-closed-doors practice match, with Jones scoring a try.

Former All Black Justin Marshall, who moved to the Ospreys in the summer, scored a try for the Select XV.

"Ryan and Brent came through the full contact fixture with typical fighting spirit," said Ospreys coach Lyn Jones.

"It was a valuable exercise in blending the new players and those returning from long-term injury back into the team in a competitive environment.

"As a group the players looked sharp and we are already looking forward to facing Harlequins in just over three weeks time."

Cockbain (detached hamstring) and Jones (shoulder reconstruction) were forced to sit out much of last season.

Knee problems have blighted Bishop's fledgling career

It has not been all good news for the Ospreys, though, with number eight Andy Lloyd picking up a training bump that is likely to keep him sidelined for a fortnight.

More worryingly, ex-Wales Under-21 centre David Bishop has undergone another operation on his knee.

The 22-year-old was experiencing discomfort around the kneecap he smashed playing against Munster in Cork 10 months ago, and is not now expected back until the middle of September.

"It's a setback for David, but the key thing is that his knee is put right once and for all," Lyn Jones told the South Wales Evening Post.

"He will miss a couple of weeks of the season, but let's hope that lady luck starts to smile on him when he does return."
