Warriors land scrum-half Cusiter

Glasgow Warriors' new signing Chris Cusiter
Cusiter is returning to Scotland after two years in France with Perpignan

Glasgow Warriors have signed 26-year-old Scotland international and Lion Chris Cusiter from Perpignan.

The scrum-half seized the chance to play in France in 2007 when his club, Border Reivers, closed down, signing a two-year deal at the Stade Aime Giral.

Cusiter, who has signed a three-year Warriors deal, said: "I'm joining an ambitious club with huge potential and I'm excited about the challenges."

Warriors coach Sean Lineen described the signing as "fantastic news".

The announcement by Glasgow Warriors follows their recent 33-26 win over Toulouse in the Heineken Cup and is a major boost to the team's prestige.

Cusiter joined the Reivers in 2003 after spells at Watsonians and Boroughmuir and captained the Magners League side until the club's finances failed.

When the Aberdeen-born player was snapped up by Top 14 side Perpignan, he viewed the move as a chance to add to his game.

Now Cusiter, capped 39 times, plans to bring to Firhill what he has gleaned from his stint in French rugby.

"Playing in France has been a fantastic experience and I've learnt a lot," said Cusiter.

"I now look forward to a successful end to the season with Perpignan before returning to Scotland in the summer.

"Both Scottish pro-teams have been getting good results recently and Glasgow have made their future intentions clear with some great performances, especially with the recent win over Toulouse.

"I believe it's the right time to come back to Scotland. I'm looking forward to earning a starting place for Glasgow which, in the long run, may also help my international aspirations as we look forward to the Rugby World Cup in 2011."

Lineen coached Cusiter at Boroughmuir when the Meggetland side won the 2003 Premiership title, and is evidently delighted at securing the signature of the British and Irish Lion.

"Chris is a world-class player who I've admired for many years. The experience he has from playing in France cannot be underestimated," said the Warriors coach.

"This signing shows that Glasgow are moving in the right direction and I can't wait to see Chris in a Warriors shirt next season."
