Scotland finished a poor campaign on a sour note |
Losing out to virtually the last kick of the ball in Italy was a cruel end to our Six Nations campaign. It took us three games to produce a good performance and that was disappointing. After the lows of the France and Wales defeats, there were signs of promise against Ireland. We got back on track with victory over England and I believe we were going in the right direction by the end of the tournament. Hopes were high following a decent World Cup and it's tough to put a finger on why things didn't work out. Starting the second half in Rome at 17-10, we appeared to be in control and Italy did not look like finding a way back. They weren't finding good field positions or any gaps in our defence. | MY SPORT: DEBATE |
But a few errors began to creep into our game in the final 20 minutes and we were punished by a breakaway try. Sergio Parisse's crucial interception was unfortunate for us and it shifted the whole momentum of the match. But credit must go to Italy. They finished strongly and the final play that led to the winning drop-goal was very efficient. After a shaky start when were under a lot of pressure, we responded well and scored two nice tries. However, we did not finish the job and lessons will be learned. I must say the reaction to the interception from Dan Parks has been over the top. Parisse took a gamble and it paid off. Some of the stick handed out to Dan is unfair but he's a thick-skinned character as well as a skilful player. He had a very good World Cup and people appear to have forgotten that. Next up is the summer tour to Argentina but I'm not sure if I'll be involved. The French championship clashes with the early June dates and Perpignan aim to be in the hunt at the semi-final stage, so I'm not sure how that will work out. A summer tour is always something players look forward to and it's a great opportunity to impress the coaches. It will be really tough though and most teams in the world will struggle against the Pumas on home soil. It was disappointing not to be involved for the last two matches but I've just got to concentrate on my club form and finish the season strongly. Moving to France has taken me out of a comfort zone but I believe it was the right decision and my game can only benefit from it. Chris Cusiter was speaking to BBC Sport Interactive's Colin Moffat
