Scotland scrum-half

Though we didn't reach the 60 points margin that had been mentioned in some of the media in the build-up to Saturday's match, I think there were enough positives to tell us that we took a step forward against Romania.

They provided physical opposition and despite the final scoreline, we knew we had been in a game.

Romania perhaps aren't a top 10 country, but they know where their strengths lie and they stuck to their game plan for 80 minutes.

Their scrum was rock solid all afternoon and their half backs posed a few questions with some huge up-and-unders.

My friend said I've got a "silly face" when I score a try

On another day, perhaps one of them could have led to a try but our defence was good all day and the kicks were all taken care of effectively.

I had an hour of observation of their team and decided whilst making my way onto the pitch that their front row in particular should be avoided if at all possible, particularly for a scrum half like myself.

I thought some of the tries we scored were excellent, particularly Phil Godman's, coming off the back of two lovely round-the-back passes, and Hugo Southwell's second try after a good set-piece move.

Romania are pretty effective in slowing the ball down and the biggest challenge is trying to keep up the speed of the game and get the quick ball which is so conducive to scoring tries. I think we did that well most of the afternoon and implemented our game plan effectively.

The downside to Saturday's match was most certainly the injury to Jason White.

We are in a good frame of mind at the moment and Murrayfield is starting to become a difficult place to come and win

He has been nothing short of inspirational during his time as captain, and has been playing the best rugby of his career.

In my opinion he would fit into any international side in the world and hence should he be injured, for even one match, he would be a major loss.

But if that is the case it's a collective responsibility to bring the playing group even closer together and that we all strive to emulate the standards that Jason epitomises.

Just now we are all hoping for a speedy recovery for Jason.

It took Johnnie Beattie approximately 14 minutes to score a try for Scotland, on his debut. Rob Dewey followed that up after 55 minutes with his first try for Scotland, on his debut.

Well done to them.

They both had accomplished first caps and look set to pick up a cupboard full in the future.

Jason White's injury was a blow for Scotland

Before Saturday's match, I had picked up one try in 24 matches, against Australia over there in 2004.

Bitter? Never! Some people have it, and some people don't.

I like to think of myself as more of a provider for other people! I was however delighted to score my first try at Murrayfield, a very special moment in my career.

However, I really must work on my try-scoring face, as one of my friends pointed out to me via text message with the simple words "you've got a silly face when you score a try Cus".

Point taken.

The next couple of weeks will no doubt bring more difficult challenges, but Saturday was a good start.

Though the Pacific Islanders were defeated by Wales, they were starting to look very dangerous in the latter part of the match and as you might expect, they have some dangerous runners in the backs.

It will be difficult, but we are in a good frame of mind at the moment, and Murrayfield is starting to become a difficult place to come and win.
