Roff crossed for a questionable score against Argentina |
England coach Clive Woodward is wary of the way World Cup referees rule on the block in midfield. Woodward pointed to Joe Roff's try for Australia against Argentina on Friday night when he considered that Australia got away with blatant obstruction.
But he said that because the move is done at lightning speed, it is sometimes virtually impossible for the official at ground level to pick it up.
With that in mind, Woodward and defensive coach Phil Larder plan to intensify the defensive ploys against such moves.
"It's the old chestnut. Is it a block or is it a dummy run?" queried Woodward. "To me, Matt Burke blocked the defender. It was very well done.
"It made things very difficult for the referee with the speed it is happening at ground level. It's the rules of the game. We are doing it, and we now have to work on defensive patterns to counter it.
"It's something we have to live with, and we will be diligent at defending the blockers coming down the middle."
Woodward, meanwhile, said that his side were ready to enter the fray against a Georgian side that is an unknown quantity. "We have done our homework correctly, and we know that they are a physical side, and possess a good line-out and scrum.
"We just want to go and win the game, and anything extra we get out of the game will be a bonus.
"Realistically we just want to get the basics right with emphasis on defence, line-outs and scrums which are obviously integral parts of our game."
Woodward's assistant Andy Robinson said the players just wanted to get out on the park and start playing.
"We have worked very, very hard this week, and our ready for action. "Everything has been covered and all players want now is to see some action."
