Maul laws need changing - Ruddock

Mike Ruddock
Ruddock believes the ELVs have made the game more one-dimensional

Worcester director of rugby Mike Ruddock wants to see the Experimental Law Variation over mauling dropped to allow the return of the rolling maul.

The ELVs introduced this season allow defending teams to collapse a maul and Ruddock feels it has restricted attacking options.

"You need the ability to play a tighter or a wider game, depending on the conditions, opposition or score.

"You may not have the backs to compete with a richer or bigger club."

Ruddock added: "You can actually play a game where you contrast styles against the so called better opposition and get a result.

"It is a great tool for coaches in all leagues."

Worcester are at home to Petraca Padova in the European Challenge Cup on Saturday 24 January.

There will be full commentary on BBC Hereford and Worcester 104 fm and at bbc.co.uk/herefordandworcester.
