Mallinder states case for Dowson
Northampton Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder believes forward Phil Dowson should be given the opportunity to play for England.
The Saints Number Eight is on standby ahead of the international against New Zealand at Twickenham on Saturday.
"He's a very talented player but also an intelligent player," Mallinder told BBC Radio Northampton.
"Hopefully they can tell him exactly what he needs to do and improve on to get into that starting 15."
"He has been down there and has been training, which is fantastic as it means he's physically in front of the coaches and Martin Johnson," added Mallinder.
"As his club coach you sit back and look at the fantastic things he does for us.
"He's not just physical. He doesn't just knock the ball up and is big in the tackle.
"He's got brains as well; he can handle the ball and make opportunities for others," Mallinder said.
