Myler's kicking helped Saints close the gap on Leicester to a single point |
Northampton fly-half Stephen Myler stressed the contribution of the Saints' home supporters following Saturday's 19-3 victory over Leicester. Myler, 25, landed four penalties and a conversion to secure the win that lifted Saints to within a point of their Midlands rivals. "First and foremost we want to win for ourselves as a team," Myler told BBC Radio Northampton. "But when you hear the crowd, it makes it even sweeter to do it for them." And Myler underlined how vital it was for the team to bounce back following the previous weekend's Premiership defeat at Harlequins. | The conditions were never going to be conducive to flowing rugby, so it was important when we had the chance to get three points that I kept banging them over |
"It was a massive day for us - especially after the week before. "We owed ourselves a performance and we owed the fans one too. I think we delivered. "We're near the top of the table for a reason and that's because we've been pretty consistent this year. But we let ourselves down last week," he added. Phil Dowson scored the only try of the match as the rain fell at Franklin's Gardens - making Myler's contribution even more crucial. He said: "The conditions were never going to be conducive to flowing rugby, so it was important when we had the chance to get three points that I kept banging them over. "Fortunately I managed to get all but one." Saints continue their Premiership challenge away to Sale Sharks on Sunday (1430 GMT).
