Dragons' Rees moves to Hong Kong

Dragons assistant coach Dai Rees has left his position to become head coach of the Hong Kong Rugby Union.

The Abercarn man quit his role with Wales Sevens last year to concentrate on securing a long-term coaching deal.

He was linked with the Canada job, but has now secured the Hong Kong role, and is understood to have beaten contenders from Wales and from New Zealand.

"I'd like to thank everybody at the Dragons for releasing me to take up this fantastic opportunity," said Rees.

"The current squad are in an exciting phase of their development and I wish them every success in the current campaign and hope that they are able to continue the building process over the coming months and seasons."

Rees, 44, has spent his entire playing and coaching career in Wales.

He played fly-half for Abercarn, South Glamorgan Institute (now UWIC), Swansea, Newbridge and Newport, won four Wales A caps, and was a member of the national squad.

Rees took up a player-coach role at Cross Keys, before a serious knee injury caused him to quit.

After 11 years at Keys he went on to coaching roles with Wales Under-19s, U20s, U21s, Wales Women and the Sevens.

"I wish Dai and his family well with this opportunity to experience life in Hong Kong," said Dragons coach Paul Turner.

"Having known Dai for most of my rugby career it will be a good challenge for him in a different environment.

"He is ambitious as a coach and moving away will help develop him and help realise that ambition.

"David and family will always be welcome here within the Dragons region.

"We wish him well and thank him for all his efforts and support as a coach with us here at the Dragons."
