Lewis hits out at Dragons board
Steve Lewis
Steve Lewis has explained why the Dragons takeover collapsed
Former WRU chief executive Steve Lewis has revealed a planned takeover of the Dragons collapsed because of a row over access to the accounts.

Lewis had been acting as a facilitator between the Dragons board and the unidentified consortium which had wanted to run the Gwent region.

The consortium had promised a new stadium and "world-class" players.

But Dragons' commercial director Gethin Jenkins has hit back and said the offer to the board had not been acceptable.

"The consortium wanted to have access to the books...but access was not forthcoming," Lewis told BBC Wales' Scrum V on the radio.

There was not enough substance or detail so we felt it necessary to reject their offer

"One of the conditions of the consortium was that they wanted to have due diligence and access to the books," Lewis added.

"This was in order to put forward a business plan of rebuilding so that they could move forward, however, access to those books was not forthcoming."

Lewis admitted to being baffled as to why the access was not granted, but hinted that the Dragons may have had other offers on the table.

"I have no idea why access was not granted, in any acquisition the target would have to undergo due diligence.

"The fact that access to the books was not forthcoming probably meant the Dragons were not the interested in the plans put forward and probably had other plans."

But Dragons commercial director Gethin Jenkins hit back at Lewis' claim, saying they were well within their rights to withhold access to the books.

He said: "The reason due diligence was not granted and the accounts handed over was that no acceptable offer was put forward top the board.

"Discussion took place with the board but no offer was accepted. Due diligence in normally the last stage and once an acceptable offer is put forward on the table then it is given.

He added: "As such they didn't come forward with an offer of any substance. There was not enough substance or detail so we felt it necessary to reject their offer."

It appears that any deal with the consortium Lewis represented is now dead in the water.

But an announcement is expected at Rodney Parade imminently, with new details of proposed redevelopments of the Dragons' stadium as well as plans to develop the region.

And as Lewis explains, he hopes for everyone concerned with the region that the plans are to the benefit of the region.

He said: "I'm looking forward to the announcement.

"At the end of the day, everyone in Gwent region wants to see the Dragons prosper and be successful."
