Turner is struggling with limited recourses at the Dragons |
Newport Gwent Dragons coach Paul Turner says he must be given funds to strengthen his squad for next season. The Dragons will return to the Heineken Cup next season after a season's break, but Turner fears his side will suffer unless new signings are made.
Turner needs to find replacements for the departed Ian Gough, Gareth Cooper, Aled Brew and Nathan Brew.
"We need to take a long hard look over the next couple of weeks as to getting some qualities players," said Turner.
"We'll be talking about it with the board. I said at Harlequins after we won the European Shield a couple of seasons ago that we should have sat down the following morning.
"I knew that if we didn't start building immediately we would be in trouble come the autumn when we would have to play the likes of Stade Francais or Toulouse in a double header.
"Harlequins did nothing and ended up being relegated. We can't afford that. We need to build and move on."
The Dragons are the subject of a proposed takeover by a group of Gwent-based businessmen.
The proposal includes a plan to build a new stadium in or around the Newport area and the plans envisage completion of the stadium by September 2009.
The hope is that rugby, football and entertainment events will be held at the venue and also funds made available to boost the Dragons squad.
"We've got to look for some investment to try to bring the right sort of players here," Turner added.
"These kinds have well done this season in the Challenge Cup, but Heineken Cup is a totally different kettle of fish.
"Having lost Ian Gough, Gareth Cooper and the two Brew boys [Nathan and Aled], we need to dip into the market."
