Brookes has shown signs of promise for the Falcons this season |
Newcastle Falcons have agreed a one-year contract extension with teenage tight-head prop Kieran Brookes. With regular tight-head Carl Hayman joining Toulon this summer, Brookes, 19, could have a key role to play in the Falcons side next season. "We're delighted that one of England's most promising young tight-heads sees his future here at the Falcons," director of rugby Steve Bates said. "It is great news for the club that we have retained his services." Hayman was forced to miss Friday's 32-30 defeat of Sale Sharks in the Premiership through injury, with the reward for Brookes being a first start in Falcons colours at Edgeley Park. "It has been a steep learning curve this season going into the professional ranks, but I feel like I'm making progress and really enjoying my rugby here at Newcastle," said Brookes. "It was fantastic to get my first Guinness Premiership start last Friday at Sale Sharks, I enjoyed the experience and I'm hungry to push on further. "Newcastle is the ideal place for me to do that with the set-up and the ambition here at the club right now, and I can't wait to be involved." As well as impressing with the Falcons first team and development squads, Brookes has also earned international recognition with the England under-20 side.
