Calmness key to success - Bates

Steve Bates
Victory for Bates' side would secure their Premiership status

Newcastle director of rugby Steve Bates believes calmness is the key to success as his side look to cement their place in the Premiership.

The Falcons travel to Sale on Friday knowing that a victory would secure their top-flight staus.

Bates told BBC Newcastle: "The best way to get through this situation is to be calm and to instil as much confidence as we can in the players.

"We're confident we've got the players in the squad to go to Sale and win."

Newcastle and Sale sit just outside the relegation zone with Falcons on 32 points and Sale a point behind.

Worcester are currently bottom of the table with 26 points from their 20 matches.

"We obviously know the importance of the game and it's something at the forefront of our minds, both coaching staff and players," added Bates.

"There have been areas we probably haven't been consistent enough this season.

"We will have a good look at that at the end of the season and review all aspects of our game."
