Newcastle Eagles owner Paul Blake has revealed the club are considering a move to Northumbria University. The Eagles, who have just won the BBL title, currently play their home games at Newcastle Arena. Blake told BBC Newcastle: "Northumbria University have just built a £39m plus sports venue, including a 3,000-seater basketball venue. "Whatever decision I take in the next month or two has got to be on the right business grounds." Newcastle currently average crowds of around 3,000 in the 6,500-seater Newcastle Arena on the banks of the Tyne. | From a sports perspective this venue is absolutely unbelievable and for the players it would be perfect Newcastle Eagles owner Paul Blake |
The new facilities at the university campus in Newcastle also include a six-lane 25-metre swimming pool, a 40-metre four-lane sprint track and a 150-machine gym. "We've had four or five crowds bigger than 3,000 at the arena this year," added Blake. "We're looking at a situation here where we can be full-house every game, like St James' (Park). It would be our mini St James' and that would be fantastic. "But it's fair to say we've had a great time with Newcastle Arena and we've got a great relationship with them. "From a sports perspective this venue is absolutely unbelievable and for the players it would be perfect. "We just have to consider the commercial position and the loyalty to our relationship with the arena."
