Hayman handed Falcons captaincy

Carl Hayman
Hayman has 45 caps for the All Blacks at tight-head

Newcastle Falcons have named All Blacks prop Carl Hayman as club captain for the 2009-10 season.

The 29-year-old says he is proud to have been handed the opportunity and has high hopes for next season's Premiership campaign.

"It's a privilege to be asked," said the tight-head.

"With the club's established squad members and our talented new signings, the 2009-10 season is one that we can all be excited about."

Hayman, rated by many as the world's best tight-head, takes over from departed number eight Phil Dowson, who joined Northampton Saints at the end of the season.

Carl leads more by example than anything else

Falcons coach Steve Bates

Coach Steve Bates believes Hayman is the ideal option, with his international experience and stature within the squad.

"Carl is someone who commands instant respect right throughout world rugby, and is the natural choice to lead us next season," said Bates.

"He quite rightly has a fearsome reputation as a player, and is the sort of character who will drive up standards right across the board.

"Carl is a very unassuming guy who leads more by example than anything else, but he will say what needs to be said, and will be supported by the outstanding group of senior players we have within our squad."
