Everitt is fifth on the all-time Premiership point-scoring table

Barry Everitt, the former London Irish and Northampton fly-half, has announced his retirement from professional rugby.

Having joined Exiles from Leinster in 2000, Everitt scored 1,762 points in 169 matches before joining Northampton in 2007.

The 34-year-old said: "I've been lucky to play with leading Irish provinces and two famous clubs in England.

"There comes a point when you have to look to the future beyond rugby and that time has arrived for me."

The Irishman played just 29 times for Saints after his move to Franklin's Gardens but amassed a total of 145 points.

Recently he faced stiff competition for the number 10 jersey from England stand-off Shane Geraghty and Saxons fly-half Stephen Myler.

Everitt has been appointed director of sport at Cranmore Preparatory School for boys, in West Horsley, Surrey.
