Berkshire boxer Patrick Mendy caused a major upset by becoming the youngest ever winner of the Prizefighter series.

The 19-year-old beat Sam Horton, Daniel Cadman and Paul David in the final to clinch the title on Wedenesday.

Despite the win, Mendy told BBC Berkshire he is trying to keep his feet on the ground.

"It was a great experience for me, but I'm still learning. After this I'll get more chances of fighting. It's coming bit-by-bit and I'm happy," he said.

"You have to be patient, you don't need to rush for everything," he added. "I put my faith in Jim [Evans] - he's my trainer but he's like a dad to me. He always tells me to take my time."

Mendy revealed that his next step would be to have a break.

"I've never had time off in my life," he admitted. "I've been training every day - I might have four Sundays off in a year, so I've decided to have two months off.

"I'll keep running and doing some training and I'll work with my community in Maidenhead. My brothers are in America and my mother is in Sweden, so I might travel there to see them.

"My mum is very, very excited about it. She didn't want me to do boxing as she thinks it's dangerous, but she'll never believe it when I tell her I'm the Prizefighter champion."

Although Mendy is happy to be patient, his desire to succeed is stronger than ever.

"It's a dream come true. I'll be a world champion - I promise I'll do it," he added.
