Miguel Alonso keen to earn Leeds Carnegie starting spot
Alonso has signed a one-year deal at Headingley
Prop Miguel Alonso insists he has not joined Leeds Carnegie just to make up the numbers.
The 30-year-old Italian moved from Viadana on one-year deal to bolster Leeds' front-row options.
Alonso told BBC Radio Leeds: "I've come here to do my work and play a lot of games for Leeds.
"I want to help Leeds have a successful season and achieve our goal of finishing in the top six and get into the Heineken Cup."
Alonso moved to Leeds on the recommendation of lock Sean Hohneck, who made the same move from Viadana to Yorkshire this summer.
"We need 16 or 18 more points than last season to achieve our goal," added Alonso.
"I believe we can do that and maybe even more. Maybe the play-offs.
"I am happy with this team and trust them and the coaches because the mentality is very good and strong.
"There are all good guys here, but they make me feel old. They are young with good energy and that pushes everyone to make good.
"The English and French leagues are the best in the world I think. I'm excited to be playing in the Premiership and it's good for me to be testing myself against the best."
