Gloucester wing James Simpson-Daniel is set to spend the off-season recovering from surgery on his problem shoulder.

BBC Radio Gloucestershire understands that he was omitted from the England squad to tour New Zealand because the surgery was scheduled for the summer.

"It's an injury I've been carrying for a little while now. It's been gradually getting worse so it needs fixing," said the 25-year-old.

"I'll get that done, get on the road to recovery and roll on next season."

Simpson-Daniel has been in excellent form for the Cherry-and-Whites this season, and was voted the supporters' Player of the Year.

Sole objective

But he has not featured for England recently despite being called into the training squad at the beginning of March.

He said his sole objective now was to help Gloucester win the Premiership play-offs, starting with Sunday's semi-final against Leicester at Kingsholm.

"Leicester thumped us last year in the final, so if we can get a result against them it would be great for the club, and then one more massive performance in the final," he said.

"If we were to play well and get a result that wouldn't make it any easier for how we felt after last year's final when we were watching them lift the trophy.

"But at the same time we'd feel even worse if we lost to them at our place."
