Calleja seeks sensible salary law

Bath

Bath Rugby chief executive Bob Calleja says clubs should have the freedom to manage their own financial affairs.

Premier Rugby meet this week to discuss a reduction from 4m to 3.5m in the salary cap for next season.

But Calleja says any rules set on salaries must leave clubs scope to adapt to individual circumstances.

"By all means set the cap, but allow sufficent flexibility for each club to operate as it wants within that budget," he told the club's website.

"We cut our cloth based on what we can afford within a business budget, and if there is an economic downturn then we respond accordingly.

"I have just been through a very painful process of staff redundancies and cost-cutting measures to help keep our club on an even keel," he added.
